Magnetic Analysis Corp’s Long-Time President and Chairman William Gould
Was a Leader in Nondestructive Testing
Magnetic Analysis Corporation is sad to report the recent death of its Chairman, William S. Gould 3rd. Gould succeeded his father, a company founder, as President in 1964, and remained in that role until 2007, when he became Chairman, a position he held until his death. During his tenure, he successfully built the company from a small US-based nonde- structive test designer and manu- facturer to its current position as a global leader in providing NDT eddy current, ultrasonic and ux leakage systems and services.
In 2016, he was honored by the American Society for Nondestruc- tive Testing for his contributions to the NDT industry through his “knowledge and dedication” for over 50 years. Gould held a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Yale, where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, and an MBA degree from Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar.
Over the course of his years as President of MAC®, Gould led the company into many new develop- ments, beginning with the intro- duction of the ERIC eddy current tester in 1968, which featured solid state electronics, phase gating, and later, pulsed eddy current techniques. During the 1970’s, he expanded the company’s products to include ux leakage testers, and in 1989, MAC introduced its own line of Echomac® ultrasonic rotary testers for tube and bar.
In 1992, under Gould’s leadership, the company launched the ERIC V, the rst fully computerized eddy current tester. Featuring a real- time, full-color graphic display and sophisticated software control of test parameters and analysis of test signals, this instrument set a new benchmark for the indus- try. Gould oversaw the company’s expansion into worldwide markets along with the development of sophisticated, automated test systems for a broad range of prod- ucts - extending from small diam- eter tube, bar and wire for critical
applications to 500mm diameter oil and gas pipe.
“He combined his knowledge of science with a keen understand- ing of the nancial and strategic positioning of the company and a genuine desire to provide an opportunity for each employee to grow to their full potential. The result was not only the success- ful growth of the business, but also the long-term commitment of countless employees all over the world”, observed his son Robert R. Gould, MAC’s recently elected Chairman.
The Gould family, which has been the controlling shareholder of MAC since its founding in 1928, remains committed to the busi- ness and MAC’s current manage- ment team, ably led by President/ CEO Dudley Boden and Vice Presi- dent/CFO Thomas Gannalo. MAC’s business now includes plants in Elmsford, New York; Boardman, Ohio; Östersund, Sweden; subsid- iaries in Italy, the UK, Australia and Sweden; and representatives around the globe.
