Very Important News for Exhibitors and Visitors to Wire and Tube Düsseldorf 2008
Both the International Wire & Machinery Association (IWMA) and sister organisation the International Tube Association (ITA) have provided regular updates and advice on their respective websites about a predicted much higher than normal influx of visitors to Düsseldorf 2008 following the addition of the METAV exhibition.
Despite the associations’ efforts to warn everyone of the implications of this for hotel and travel arrangements there are reports that many exhibitors and visitors are being told by hotels that there is little or no accommodation available for that week.
As respective industry partners for wire and Tube the IWMA and ITA have taken up this issue seriously with Messe Düsseldorf and are pleased to give a more positive update on the current situation. Many hotels are indeed turning away enquirers but we have learned that in some cases they have committed blocks of rooms to the Düsseldorf Marketing & Tourismus bureau (DMT) and that these rooms are by no means yet sold out.
Ms Andrea Baule has reported back to us via Messe Düsseldorf that they still have hotel rooms available from €130 per night as well as rooms in private houses from €40 per night. (The latter were used by some of our staff in 2006 and were very clean, comfortable and conveniently situated).
So our advice to everyone yet to conclude accommodation arrangements is to contact DMT whose details are given below, together with a link to their website.

Personnel Changes on ITA’s Asia Pacific Management (APMB) Indian Management (IMB) and European Management Boards (EMB)
The ITA’s Asia Board, which is chaired by Mr T. Nakata, is set to see some changes and additions to its strength. Graeme Fitzgerald from OneSteel, Australia has resigned from the APMB following his company’s merger with Smorgon. The new business, OneSteel Australian Tube Mills has pledged its continuing support for the ITA’s APMB and General Manager Tony Schreiber will be formally elected to the board at its next meeting in March 2008. Also set to join the APMB next year are Joseph Chen of Taiwanese company Vega Engineering and Trading and C.N. Won of the Korean Wonjin Co.
Meanwhile new faces on the IMB will be welcomed at their next meeting in New Delhi in February. Joining the IMB and strengthening its non-ferrous sector representation will be Naresh Bhandari of the Bhandari Group and Vibash Gupta of Alcobex.
Finally, the EMB is pleased to have welcomed Friedrich Kehrer of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH to its strength.

A Highly Successful Move from Singapore to Bangkok
The charming multilingual staff on the joint International Tube Association/International Wire & Machinery Association booth at the inaugural wire/Tube Southeast Asia trade fair were by no means the only attraction in October in Bangkok! In fact the joint exhibition, formerly known as wire/Tube Singapore, attracted higher numbers of visitors than in recent Singapore shows.

The charming staff on the joint ITA/IWMA booth at wire/Tube Southeast Asia 2007
When Messe Düsseldorf Asia (MDA), organisers of the Singapore exhibition, approached the ITA two years ago the Association and its Asia Pacific Board readily gave their full support for the transfer to Bangkok. Given the dynamic growth in the local and closer regional economies it made complete sense to re-locate to a city that is much more of an industrial hub.
Statistics provided by MDA report that Tube Southeast Asia 2007 attracted 130 exhibitors occupying 2,038m2 of space whilst at wire Southeast Asia 2007 258 exhibitors filled 4,122m2. MDA further reported that a total of 7,038 visitors attended the combined three-day trade fair.
The joint ITA/IWMA booth occupied pole position directly in front of the main entrance to the fair and more than 100 combined enquiries for both associations were obtained during the event. It was very noticeable that there was a marked increase in the number of visitors from Thailand, Vietnam and India in particular than at the last Singapore exhibition. Together with the supporting Non Ferrous Bangkok seminar the trade fair proved to be an excellent medium for publicising the activities and benefits of ITA membership and indeed a number of new applications to join the Association were received.
Anecdotal reports from ITA members and exhibitors at Tube Southeast Asia suggest that the move to Bangkok had very tangible benefits and was in every way, apart from the terrible city traffic, a very good move. Incidentally, by the time of the next Bangkok exhibition, scheduled for 13-15 October 2009, the new Skytrain station at the BITEC venue will be open, offering fast, efficient and regular air-conditioned transport to the centre of Bangkok, thus overcoming this one main criticism of the event.
Finally a return to the subject of the local staff hired by the Associations both for their own combined booth and for those exhibitors who took one of the special Sawaddee Ka exhibitor packages. The local staff agency contracted by the ITA and IWMA took considerable trouble to interview and recruit students from engineering faculties at various Bangkok universities to act as interpreters and stand hostesses at the exhibition. The quality of these charming young people was a credit to the agency and many exhibitors told us that they were highly impressed by the staff provided. Whenever the ITA compiles one of its exhibitor packages at events like Tube Southeast Asia or Tube China or Tube Russia we try very hard to find the best possible local staff. When they are as charming as Urb, Bee, Looknam, Aum and Lin, left to right in the photo, it is simply a big bonus!

The ITA’s Ambitious Technical Event Programme for 2007 Promoted Technical Exchange and Education Worldwide
No one could accuse the ITA of lacking ambition in 2007 with the association having organised or co-organised no less than four technical events!
The first event, co-organised with the Roll Forming Research Committee of the Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity, was held at Nagoya University, Japan in June and, as reported in the previous edition of ITAN this symposium was considered to have been a great success by many of the 180 participants. A good illustration of this is the subsequent higher than usual demand for copies of the papers presented at Nagoya Tube 2007.
In late August another joint event, Pipe & Tube Houston 07, took place in Houston, Texas with 117 delegates. This unique collaboration between the ITA and the American based TPA was reportedly the best conference ever held by the ITA in North America. The programme included technical sessions, round table workshops and plant visits as well as a variety of social activities. Such was the success of the conference that the ITA and TPA are already in early discussions concerning possible future co-operative events.
Every two years the ITA holds its major international conference with past major events taking place in such illustrious venues as Prague, Veracruz (Mexico), Bilbao, Toronto, Goa and Beijing. Now the industrial city of Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine has joined the roll of honour following Tube Ukraine International 2007, which was held in September at the Palace of Culture Metallurgists in the city that is situated in the heart of the Ukrainian tube and pipe industry. An incredible total of sixty-nine papers were presented in two conference rooms over two days and an additional twelve papers that could not be accommodated in the timetable were also published in the conference proceedings.
Joint organiser of Tube Ukraine International was the Ukrainian tube association Ukrtruboprom, whose Mrs Nataliya Koryaka was a tower of strength in the planning and implementation of the event, which was attended by 230 delegates. Complementing the conference were twenty-four tabletop exhibits, highly informative plant tours and a wonderful social event for all participants. Very important sponsorship support was received from a number of organisations and the ITA and Ukrtruboprom were very appreciative of this. In particular two major tube companies Centravis (formerly UVIS) and Interpipe offered tremendous support and facilities for the conference.
Feedbacks from delegates to Dnepropetrovsk were very positive. “Many thanks for arranging an excellent conference – one which once again provided a valuable platform to all concerned. We came away with several interesting contacts……..you can count on our full support on all future ITA conferences”, David Gardiner, Inductotherm HWT. “Thanks a lot for the organisation….the meetings and service were perfect. I had a lot of contacts..”, Laurent Jacquemin, Westaflex Automotive Group. The conference was very widely publicised in the region with DNK magazine describing Dnepropetrovsk as the “world capital of the tube industry for three days”.
The non-ferrous sector was not forgotten in the ITA’s 2007 technical programme. Although all the events reported above included a number of non-ferrous sector papers the ITA’s Technical Management Committee decided that it was timely to organise a seminar exclusively for this important part of the industry. Following discussions with sister organisation the International Wire & Machinery Association a joint tube and wire event Non Ferrous Bangkok took place during the new wire/Tube Southeast Asia exhibition in the Thai capital in October. Eleven speakers presented thirteen papers to an audience of around fifty delegates. The programme included pure non-ferrous wire presentations, joint wire and tube topics and finally pure tube topics.
Once again the above series of events clearly exemplifies the main ethos of the ITA in promoting technical excellence, education and technical exchange throughout the world.
Papers from all of these technical events can be purchased from the ITA with special discounts for members. CDROMs of the complete proceedings are available for the Dnepropetrovsk, Houston and Bangkok programmes.

New Location for Tube India International 2008
– A Very Positive Step
Messe Düsseldorf GmbHtogetherwith its new Indian subsidiary,Messe Düsseldorf India Pvt.Ltd.and Messe Essen GmbH (organiser of Schweissen und Schneiden Essen), will once again jointly organise the3rd Tube India Internationaland Schweissen & Schneiden Indiaexhibitionsfrom 13-15 February, 2008 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. A concurrent event, Metallurgy India, will also take place.
Tube India International 2008 is presented and managed by the organisers ofTube Düsseldorf, the world's No.1 Trade Fair for the tube and pipe industries. It was decided to re-locate the exhibition to New Delhi for several reasons. New Delhi is the heart of India and Tube India International 2008 is now a showcase event.Officials and decision makers from the Government of India, public and private sectors are very much based in the capital of the country and in nearby business areas.
Major users of steel, e.g. manufacturers of components, bicycles, etc. are based in North India. New Delhi is well connected and has the best of world-renowned hotels, making it more convenient for people to travel and stay in the city, notwithstanding that the month of February is the ideal time to visit the beautiful sights of this historical place.
The move from south to north India was a conscious decision as the users of steel on a large scale are based in the north of the country. Tube India International 2008 provides an opportunity to have mutually beneficial business relations for both domestic and overseas exhibitors. The show will also provide ample opportunity to view the latest technology and know-how in the metal industry in India today. The last exhibition, held in February 2005 at the HITEX Fair Grounds, Hyderabad, attracted 114 exhibitors and 5000 visitors. In 2008, about 150 exhibitors and 7000 visitors are expected to participate.
Pragati Maidan, India's world-class exhibition complex, covers 149 acres of prime land in the heart of India's capital. It offers about 61,290 sqm of covered exhibition space in 16 halls plus 10,000 sqm of open display area. The state-of-the-art exhibition halls have enhanced the appeal of Pragati Maidan as the ideal center for an increasing number of fair organisers and business visitors from different parts of the world.
Mr. Udo Schürtzmann, a seasoned trade show expert with a wealth of international experience, is the Managing Director of the new Messe Düsseldorf Indian subsidiary. He comments, ‘’entering the Indian market presents us with a formidable challenge. In the years ahead, our aim is to consolidate our own business and ramp up Messe Düsseldorf's agency activities on the subcontinent’’.
